I feel for ICM’s Stuart Lawley.. shot down again and again on his application for the .XXX domain extension. The bottom line is, this would be a great domain extension because it contains lots of organic type-in traffic. Search engine data shows that people are predisposed to type these names with the extension even though they don’t exist yet!
Lawmakers don’t want the extension because of the religious right. Adult site operators don’t want the extension because they’ve spent a fortune building/branding adult sites in .com and are freaked out that somebody else might get the generic adult search-terms and phrases they own in .com as .xxx extensions. Picture a bunch of folks who own expensive condos saying they don’t want the adjacent properties rezoned for condos because the new towers will reduce the value of their existing property, and/or take away their view.
Too many people fighting against this on too many levels.. so the names don’t get added to the zone, but continue to resolve in browser error-search everywhere flowing down to MSN, Google, Verizon, Charter and others making money by serving advertising to non-resolving traffic.
