.eu registrations up. Renewal rates above 80%

Josh says: How many folks are building websites on .eu ?  I have no idea.

***FS***  I haven’t done enough digging to understand the logic of why this is happening..  But I’m unimpressed with the .eu space..  Could be the honeymoon phase isn’t over yet..  and landrush domain names (names bought during the landrush launch phase of a new name-space) are usually top search / dictionary terms which have some obvious value above registration price.. It will be interesting to see if renewal rates hold next year after the grivity of the debt market melt-down starts to trickle-down to the real economies of the world..

Then again..  maybe the space will have legs..  I much prefer CCtld’s of european countries.. But it also could be that the euro currency strength will help the similarly named .EU space..  Imagine a meltdown of dollar currency threatening the validity of .com for a minute..  Okay..  too philisophical for Tuesday AM.  :)

Me thinks you had too much coffee this a.m.
    :)

Imo, .com’s strength lies in it’s connection with business and media, and being, in general, the default domain extension. I don’t think the lack of confidence in the US dollar or US/Global economy will change this in a significant way, or perhaps at all.

.com is synonymous with the web, and the web isn’t going away.

I say this, and i’m not as much of a .com devotee as you are. :)

  2. I think what makes up much of DotEU’s popularity, is that, since we have the EU and since the introduction of the Euro, people in Europe have adopted a European identity. Many think of themselves as Europeans rather than Germans or Italians, for example. Therefore, chances for the ongoing success of DotEU are not that bad.

However, it’s true that ccTLDs make up most of the traffic, of course, and people will continue to prefer their country’s ccTLD to .EU. But every company in the EU that does business online should register their company name under DotEU in order to complete their portfolio, in my opinion. And that’s probably what lots of companies have done, hence the >80% renewal rate.
