Q: www.moniker.com has posted their auction list for the Miami auction. Frank, what do you think of the general quality of domains on their list? I have seen better ones on Sedo or GoDaddy! I am not exactly excited about this auction…
***FS*** I think the auction is going to be a big hit. Monte’s team is getting better at picking good names to cross the block. These names are going to cross at solid prices. I used to own half of promotion.com and gave my half to a friend/colleague trying to get back on his feet.. it’s a huge name .. "Advertising" and "Promotion" are what drive the economy after all – and John DeMayo’s Advertising.com was purchased for 300+mm by AOL in no small part due to their name… There are scores of names.. scores of stories like that one crossing the block this time. If you can find better deals through SEDO then back up the truck and buy girlfriend, cuz these are really good… Those I’ve seen anyway.

Let’s keep it real!
The Moniker has some new names but alot of those are names that have crossed the block several times in the past. I think this is a recurring issue as the supply of available quality names is deminishing for auctions.
Look at the trend at greatdomains, it’s there too.
While it’s most definately a great domain. I think that it had relatively very little to do with what the company sold for. Advertising.com went for $435M which worked out to about 19X EBIT. AOL got a great deal for the company. They were just really gaining momentum. If the company had changed hands in 2007 instead of June 2004 I think it would have been for more like
$3 Billion, and not to AOL. AOL should really spin this off and IPO. I do think promotion.com is a good domain, it should do pretty well.
Honestly, I don’t think the domain name had anything at all to do with the purchase price AOL paid (in AOLs mind). Whether it helped our business, impacted our financials, and impacted the sale price in that manner is much harder to say.
I definately agree that many domains are great, but then again..

Perhaps I am just a sore loser. I have only been at this for 2 months, and have 400 more domains of this caliber…Am I fooling myself? Feedback Please! I have to make this biz work. My Dad has Alzheimer’s,and I need work that I can do from home, and make great money. I was hoping that I had done the research(I have read every post, archive, and all links daily!). Am I on track or in quicksand? Thanks, Kelly
Kelly, i’m sorry…but those domains you have mentioned above…truly suck bigtime…looks like you have no clue about domain names….stop wasting your money buying bull crap domains and use that money to help your dad….Kelly, you need to get a new line of work…this domain biz is definately not for you…you are truly clueless…i’m sorry to say all this…but it’s true!!!
Hi Kelly,
I winced a little when I read Andy’s comments but you did ask for feedback. Better to know this now than many more $1000s out-of-pocket. I did think that BuyWise.com had good branding potential, but having just checked, it was registered as a Trademark in 2000. Unless you are also the TM owner, any attempt to use or sell this domain might open you to legal action.
If you really want to learn and grow in this business, then look at joining one of the community forums such as Namepros.com. They have a long thread going on at the moment on the upcoming TRAFFIC auction. They also have peer appraisal forums where you can post your domains for comment. Be prepared for more comments like Andy’s though.
Good luck.
Yikes Andy! I really appreciate your feedback so if I could ask another question to Frank’s World…
Buywise.com averages 480 uniques a month, with a 33% ctr. The avg. rpc is .23c. The page is optimized for Real estate. On the other hand, payloansoff.com (only parked for 3 weeks) had 3 uniques, with a 100% ctr. The avg. rpc was $3.963. The last example is mortgagerefinancingasap.com. It had only 1 visit in 3 weeks, but it had 3 clicks, at a rpv of $7.73, and a ctr of 300%.
What do most domainers consider are worthy numbers in terms of a quality domain to hold, and more importantly to purchase?
If mine are doing that just parked at a site with no bells, can I infer that with content and some decent seo, that they might look good to a buyer??? I am really trying to get a handle on what parameters buyers use. Some parked sites have no traffic, and still sell for a pretty penny. I have used wordtracker and overture, on those names and wonder why they sold for so much. Any comments would be appreciated. (Andy, by the way, I support my parents financially already, I am just looking for a way to do it from home, so I am more available to help my Mom out with Dad. I am a good girl, so be gentle with me please.)
Kelly
Hi Kelly,
Following on my earlier response to you, I think the best place for you to post this kind of open question is in a forum such as Namepros.com rather than an individual blog. Try the Parking & Monetization forum there.
Frank,
I am following up on my earlier post about the quality of some of the domains at the Traffic auction, and wondering if you know what the final price for the following domains were:
uniformpatterns.com
vintagehats.net
yardsale.org
collegesspringbreakcruises.com
wwwdiamondengagementrings.com
youearncommissions.com
I thought they were lame, but I can’t find them on the auction results list. Do you have access to the Silent auction sales list? Just curious what they sold for. These domains were just a sample of the type I was referring to that you can find on Sedo or GoDaddy auctions. Thanks!
Well it looks as though ASCII.com are going to go into a stand-off phase.
Dot Mobi looks like the heir apparent but with the launch of Firefox Mobile for Symbian will prove to be the Young Pretender.
The next Dot Bust launch is already in Sunrise.
So where do the markets go for here?
Well, the next bonanza is just around the corner. IDN is about to explode onto the World Stage. These will take their place along side other domains in the same registeries. They will not compete with existing dot coms, or indeed devalue most of the them significant, but they will explode the myth that traffic figures on existing ASCII can simply be extrapolated as the next Billion internet users come on line.
The market for domains is going global, whilst Traffics is stuck in a North American niche. It is ironic hearing them talking of the those “that do not get it, and do not want to get”.
The market will not only provide the demand for more and different domains, but they will suck in capital from the emerging economic superpowers. So more opportunity but perhaps also more competition.
Anyway, markets have a momentum of their own. Things will take the direction they must. All we can do is watch carefully and be prepared to seize opportunities as they arise. Those that seek to dictate agendas will be exposed for the fool they are.
